Dr. Nilo Amaral, a Brazilian aesthetic plastic surgeon, who operates in Curitiba, Brazil, speaks about abdominoplasty for women who have not yet had children. Learn more!
Is abdominoplasty surgery recommended for women who have not yet had children?
There isn’t a formal contraindication regarding abdominoplasty in patients who still don’t have children, once the main goal in this procedure is to eliminate the abdominal skin excess. What is not very recommended is the rectus abdominis muscle plication, the well known “six-pack” muscle. Plication means to aproximate this muscle with stitches in women who have it separated in order to improve the patient waist curvature. This surgical step is ideally avoided in patients that still don’t have children and intend to because during pregnancy there’s a huge chance of disrupture of these stitches. however is remarcable that we are talking about a recommendation, not a contraindication.
What is the ideal age?
There isn’t an ideal age to perform abdominoplasty, once we are dealing with an adult patient. what does exist is the indication to its performance or not, which is the existence of abdominal skin excess, especially in the portion below the umbilicus (“belly button”).
Is it advisable to have an abdominoplasty performed along with another surgery procedure such as a breast?
There isn’t a contraindication in performing more than one procedure, as long as you have a well trained staff already used with this kind of surgery. Also extremely important to pay attention to the protocols for safe surgery, such as surgical procedures no longer than 4 hours (as recommended by the brazilian society of plastic surgery), the use of compression socks during the whole surgery combined with intermittent pneumatic compression boots, early deambulation and subcutaneous enoxaparin (anticoagulant to reduce the risk of thrombosis).
